Strange encounters
Interview with Luciana Carro at the Crossroads convention
Peter Glotz (Pedda) and René Kissien (Lex) | 3 November 2008
In November 2007, Luciana Carro was in the small town of Bad Salzdetfurth to attend her first convention in Germany, Crossroads. Following up on an interview at Utopia 8 three weeks earlier, Luciana again granted German BSG fansite Caprica City a short interview.
Find out about how the success of Battlestar changed her life and work, why fan reactions can be quite embarrassing, what she thinks of the rivalry with Starbuck, and how she dealt with the revelations concerning Kat's past.
You can discuss this interview here on the Fanboard, while you can find a German translation here at Caprica City.
Caprica City: Did the show's popularity change your life in any way? Do the fans recognize you on the street? Did you have any oddball encounters?
Luciana Carro: I had no oddball encounters, just encounters, in Los Angeles. I had people came up to me saying "Hey, you're Kat from Battlestar!" I'm always surprised that they recognize me, and sometimes I forget that they recognize me from the show. For me, I'm a normal person walking down the street, but then those big fans recognize me as Kat from Battlestar. I went to a guitar store with a friend and the guy in the guitar store just freaked out.
I have seen producers getting crazy, too. I go into auditions and I'm nervous because of the audition. And then I walk in and they go like "You have to leave for a second". I think "Oh no, what did I do?", and when I get back in five minutes later, they are like "We just had to get ourselves together, I can't believe that we are meeting you right now!"
I also work at night clubs sometimes, and sometimes people come in, [saying] "Oh my gosh, I can't believe it's you". That's weird. This one time, I was driving and I got lost. I rolled down my window and asked the guy next to me: "Do you know how I can get to so and so?“ He said: "Hey, you're Kat from Battlestar!" He pulled in front of me – he had a convertible – and showed the way, going "I'm her pilot!". It was embarrassing, but it was cool.
Caprica City: What was the oddest thing when you googled your name on the Internet?
Luciana: Oh yeah, this one time, I couldn't sleep. I was on the computer googling myself and I found a website, like a chat room, and they were talking about how bad my spelling was. They got really passionate about my spelling. They were like "that can't be her!" I commented on a YouTube video, and I guess my spelling was really bad. Which I admit, I'm a horrible speller.
And I think the guy who did the video wasn't sure if it really was me who commented, and they were talking about it. "I don't think that’s her, the spelling is so bad, that can't be her. Nobody can spell that bad." I was laughing so hard. They waste all those energy on my spelling. It was funny, like "this person obviously doesn't have more than a grade two education".
Caprica City: When you started as Kat on Battlestar, did you make up a back story for your character, even before they came up with "The Passage"? Did you like the drug runner thing?
Luciana: I don't mind the dark past, it gave her depth. It's better than having no past. It wasn't what I thought of before, but I actually liked the back story they gave me. She did something before [the Fall of the Colonies] that was shady, to survive and to make money. Stuff like that. In my own back story, I had basically imagined that both of her parents had passed away.
Caprica City: Didn't she say "Hi mom!" in "Final Cut"?
Luciana: Yeah, that was just because usually people say that line when they get in front of the camera. I kind of threw it in; it was a line that I made up. It wasn't actually in the script. I threw it in because maybe they bring Kat's mom in sometime, they could have gone both ways.
But in my mind everybody was already dead. She didn't really have a family. She joined Galactica to be part of their family. Which, in the end, was kind of true.
Caprica City: Is there anything you would have liked the writers to explore more?
Luciana: Yeah, since they brought up the drug runner thing and the transport of humans, I would have liked them to do some kind of flashback on that. That would have been cool. A flashback when Kat used to be Sasha, and what kind of person she was back then. That would have been great.
Caprica City: Is this the first time that you and Patrick "Enzo" Currie are on stage together?
Luciana: It's the first time I've seen him since we shot. We had dinner last night.
Caprica City: How would you describe Kat's relationship with Starbuck?
Luciana: I think a lot of it was attraction. She really looked up to Starbuck even when she gave her a hard time. I think Kat really wanted to be like Starbuck, and Kat had a really deep love for her. When she saw that she was just going down... we didn't know, her recklessness could have killed her. You know, that last scene with her face to face with Scar, and she's not going to let Kat make the kill until the last second, I thought she might die.
As much as there was this combativeness, and maybe Starbuck didn't like Kat, I think Kat really loved Starbuck. She was trying to get her approval and her love, and Starbuck just wouldn't give any to her, ever. Not even on her deathbed. The way she approached the bed, "They said you wanted to see me?".
Caprica City: Last but not least, you're good friends with Bodie Olmos (Hot Dog). How would you describe him?
Luciana: He is a lady’s man. He is just as awesome as his dad, and really humble, too. He's a normal guy; even Edward James Olmos is normal. Very nice, very loving, very welcoming. I love Bodie, and I love Mr. Olmos.
Caprica City: Thank you once again for your time.
Luciana: You're welcome.
