"Punching Starbuck was fun"
Luciana's interview at the BSGcast frak party in Las Vegas
Peter Glotz (Pedda) | January 14, 2009
In early April 2008, Luciana joined more than 100 fans in attending the "BSGcast in Las Vegas" frak party to celebrate the première of Battlestar Galactica's fourth (and last) season. The event was held at the Golden Nugget casino in Las Vegas, Nevada.
Among other activities, Luciana sat down for an interview conducted by Rudy Jahchan. BSGcast kindly agreed to present their video on the Luciana Carro Fansite as well.
In this interview, Luciana explains how an Xbox helped her getting a job that eventually kept her busy for more than two years – until the devastating news of Kat's demise. Beside heaping praise on former castmate Edward James Olmos, she talks about her part in upcoming independent thriller Urgency, and shares how she feels about her fans.
You can discuss the interview here on the Fanboard.
Transcript of the interview
Rudy Jahchan: Hi, I'm Rudy Jahchan, and I'm here with Luciana Carro...
Luciana Carro: Hi!
Rudy: ...who played Kat on Battlestar, and sadly had to depart the show last season. A lot of us fans followed the series along with Kat – as she started off with small one-liners here and there, but developed into this huge character. How did you start up on the show?
Luciana: I auditioned for it, and I got the role.
Rudy: [But] you also told a fascinating story regarding an Xbox...
Luciana: Yeah, I brought my Xbox control pad. Well, it wasn't really mine, it was one of my friend's, I borrowed it. I didn't have a DVD player at that time, so he lent me his Xbox. And that was where I was playing DVDs on. So I brought the Xbox control pad to the audition. I imagined that I was one of those kids who play video games and get really into it... [imitates agitated gaming] That's what I did.
Rudy: And apparently you got really into it when you actually got into the cockpit later on...
Luciana: ...yeah, and I pulled my neck. I did a lot of acupuncture and massage.
Rudy: You were saying there were just one or two lines at first, but next thing you know... So when did they get back to you and said "okay, we want to build up your character"?
Luciana: Well, they didn't really tell me that. They just gave me the "Final Cut" script, and I said "wow, I got a nice little storyline here". I had a drug problem on the show, and that was kind of cool.
Rudy: Who doesn't have a drug problem on that show?
Luciana: I know. Well, Kat had it pretty bad.
Rudy: Speaking of decking people... Decking Starbuck is probably one of the defining moments of the character. Your character is always almost the mirror, counterpoint to her. They were always trying to build up [Starbuck as someone who's] so tough.
But your character actually was as tough [as her], and even better in some sense, [for example] when Scar came along. How was that like on set ,when you actually had to go through that entire episode, "Scar"?
Luciana: It was so much fun. It was a lot of pressure because it was the first time they really did a lot on Kat. So I had to really do a lot of character development in that episode. But... punching Starbuck... that was fun. I liked it.
Rudy: Very lady-like behavior when you did that... Are you working on anything else right now?
Luciana: Yes, I am shooting this independent movie called Fast Track, which I think is called Urgency now, with Regent Films. We haven't finished shooting yet.
Rudy: Can you tell us anything about it?
Luciana: Yeah, it's a thriller/suspense movie. I get kidnapped, gagged, and tied up and thrown into the basement. Totally different than Kat, because she can't fight this girl. She get's kidnapped and she's totally defenseless. But we're not finished yet.
Rudy: So you don't even know what's gonna happen?
Luciana: No, they keep pushing the pick-up dates.
Rudy: Of course one of the big things for every actor is when their character dies on their show. How dramatic was that for you, or not dramatic?
Luciana: It was devastating. And I always say that because it really was, I was really devastated. Because I didn't see it coming...
Rudy: ...I don't think anybody saw it coming...
Luciana: ...and nobody warned me about it. I had to say goodbye to Kat real quick. It was sad.
Rudy: One of the hallmarks of Battlestar is what a fantastic cast it has. You mentioned that one your highpoints was working with Edward James Olmos. Can you tell us some of the reasons, why?
Luciana: I have a tremendous amount of respect for Edward and everything that he's done for the Latino community. I think he's a first-rate actor. And he's just so down to earth and humble and approachable. He's like a father figure to rest of the cast... actually to the crew and the cast, everybody.
Rudy: Apart from that... my compliments to you! Because, like I said before, you were going up against Starbuck, which also means going up against Katee Sackhoff's acting. It's just one of the great things about this series that even the second-tier characters have this strong acting quality. Say, did some of the characters' relationships carry over to real-life friendships?
Luciana: Well, a lot of us knew each other from the Vancouver acting scene. There's a lot of Canadians on the show. Many of us knew each other from before the show started. And a lot of us still do keep in touch.
Rudy: If fans want to reach out to you, how can they do so?
Luciana: Well, there's a new website that just got launched a couple days ago. The website is LucianaCarroFanSite.com. I'm really excited about it. My fans put a lot of work into it, a lot of love.
Rudy: How do you feel about the fans in general?
Luciana: Oh my god, I love them. They keep me going. They've just been absolutely so loyal and supportive of my career, and not just on Battlestar, but everything that I've done. They keep me going. Like, right now is a really slow time in Hollywood...
Rudy: ...Writers' Strike...
Luciana: ....yeah, the Writers' Strike really affected a lot of actors. We're just recuperating from it right now. So it's nice to know they still send me notes and letters all the time, or hit me up on MySpace and the fansites.
Rudy: The final question, of course, has to be about the final Cylon. Do you have any idea who the final Cylon is?
Luciana: I have no idea... [eyes turning red]
