Crossroads convention
Luciana in Germany
Frosty | July 24, 2009
After the successful Utopia convention in October 2007, many of Luciana’s European fans wondered if they would ever have a second chance to meet her. So it came as quite a surprise that only three weeks after her trip to the Netherlands, she chose to attend Wolf Crossroads.
A small sci-fi convention, it was held at the Relexa hotel in the small town of Bad Salzdetfurth, Germany. Starting on Friday, November 9, the event lasted until Sunday, November 11, 2007. Beside the following report on the main acitivities during that weekend, make sure to check out the photo gallery, SF-Radio's Crossroads interview, and the respective discussion on the Fan Board, too.
Next to Luciana Carro, the guest roster included Patrick Currie (Enzo on Battlestar Galactica), Peter Williams (Apophis on Stargate SG-1) and David Nykl (Radek Zelenka on Stargate Atlantis) as well as surprise guest Chuck Campbell (Chuck on Atlantis). Together with about 150 fans, they made this well-run convention an outstanding experience.
The first big event was the meet-and-greet on Friday evening. Fans sat together in small groups at tables in the packed hotel bar, and one at a time, the star guests visited each table for a brief chat. Having just arrived from the airport, Luciana was the last of the guests to meet her fans. Despite being tired from the long journey, she still happily talked with her fans, greeting the familiar faces she met at the Utopia three weeks earlier, and getting to know new fans.
At this convention, Luciana met fellow Canadian actor Patrick Currie for the first time since they shot the Battlestar Galactica episode "The Passage", where Currie played Enzo, a dark character from Kat’s past.
On Saturday, Luciana was chosen as the star guest doing the first panel of the day. During an interesting Q&A that lasted almost an hour, she answered the attendees’ questions. Some of these questions were asked at Utopia, too, including the question about her pets. Thus, Luciana told the heart-breaking, but happy-ended story about her missing dog, Alazar, again. Both the people who already heard the story at the Utopia and the people who had not met Lucci before attentively listened to her account of these events.
Later that day, the photo session gave fans the opportunity to have professional photos taken with one’s favorite actors. Luciana once again made a lot of fans happy by posing with them, resulting in beautiful and often funny pictures.
There was also a charity auction for a bowling match with two of the stars on Saturday, with winning bids of more than € 120 (around US$ 80). The stars in question were Luciana and Chuck Campbell, each of whom lead one team. The game took place at the hotel’s bowling alley at the evening, and Lucci’s team emerged victorious.
To top this interesting and fun day off, a big party with all the attendees was trown in the main hall. The actors also joined the fans for the fun. While Peter Williams worked as a DJ for most of the evening, Luciana danced with the fans and partied till the end. Everyone was in a jolly mood, and the party was a delightful conclusion to the second wonderful day.
On Sunday, the last day of the convention, fans and actors alike were still tired from previous night's party when they gathered for the second round of Q&A panels.
Luckily, the actors had recovered when time came for one of Crossroads' highlights, the “Whose line is it anyway?” session. For this group performance, several scenes from an episode of Stargate were re-enacted on stage, but with a catch: The actors had to play the scenes in a predetermined style, which changed every few minutes.
Hence, the audience got to see and hear pirate-style sci-fi scenes, Shakespeare-style technobabble and other ridiculous things. On top of that, the genders of the actors didn’t necessarily reflect that of their assigned roles, with Luciana playing Dr. Daniel Jackson.
All these various styles of performance gave Luciana ample opportunity to come up with lots of memorable and funny facial expressions. Especially with her incredibly comical portrayal of Daniel Jackson as a crying child, she had the heartfelt laughs of the audience with her.
The next Lucci-related item on the packed schedule was a Q&A panel with both her and former castmate Patrick Currie. Since they worked closely together on the BSG episode "The Passage", many of the questions concerned their experiences tied to this pivotal – and final – Kat episode.
Luciana and Patrick made for a wonderful team, sharing interesting stories about Battlestar Galactica and acting in general. Comparing their characters' relationship, which was dominated by revulsion and dependence, with the light-hearted friendship of these two actors, was fairly fascinating.
Currie had three different roles on Stargate SG-1 and worked on six episodes in total, compared to only one episode of Battlestar Galactica, yet during this panel, he was asked BSG-related and general questions only. This was quite surprising, given that Stargate fans made up the majority of the audience (the situation was probably different during his first panel, though.).
Then, after three exciting days, the convention was nearing its end. As part of the closing ceremony, Luciana and Chuck Campbell presented a raffle, handing out lots of genre-related items (merchandise, autographs) to happy winners.
The ceremony was followed by the autograph session, where all the actors found time for small talk with the fans while signing photos, DVD covers and other items. This concluded the convention. Luciana said good-bye to her fans, and most people prepared for their journeys home.
Alhough the convention was over, one thing was certain: The people who met Luciana would always treasure the memories of this wonderful encounter with a charming young actress, who, just like at the Utopia convention, spent as much time as possible with her fans to make sure they had an unforgettable weekend.
