Memorable moments and embarrassing encounters
Luciana Carro and Patrick Currie's joint Q&A at Crossroads
René Kissien (Lex) and Frosty | July 24, 2009

Luciana Carro In November 2007, Wolf Events convention Crossroads was held in Bad Salzdetfurth (Germany). The question-and-answer panel with Luciana Carro and Patrick Currie was definitely one of the event's highlights.

While Luciana had worked on Battlestar Galactica for three years, Patrick Currie had only appeared in one singled episode. That happened to be "The Passage", the episode depicting the demise of Luciana's character, Kat. And it was Patrick Currie who played Enzo, a dark acquaintance from Kat's past.

In stark contrast to their characters' rough relationship, the two actors shared a light-hearted friendship and had great chemistry at the event. Crossroads marked the first time they met since shooting "The Passage", and they were happy to see each other again.

The Q&A session started with Patrick Currie asking the audience whether anyone had seen "The Passage". Since the majority of the people in the audience were Stargate fans (there were several Stargate actors at the convention, including Currie himself, who had played various roles on SG-1), only few had actually seen the episode. Still, there were enough Battlestar Galactica fans to ensure the actors didn't run out of questions to answer, and fans of both shows had a great time during the panel.

Luciana Carro First, Luciana and Patrick talked about how they met before shooting the episode. Luciana wasn't too fond of the script, especially Kat’s relationship with Enzo (not to mention Kat’s death). She didn’t like the notion that Kat would be intimidated by this man, and she felt there was no information given about these characters' past that would have justified that behavior. So she decided to try and work out a believable back story together with Patrick, texting him that they needed to talk. Patrick didn't know what to make of this message at first; he didn’t know Luciana and wondered whether he had done anything wrong.

It was not surprising Luciana and Patrick experienced their work on this episode very differently. He was glad he got an acting gig, whereas Luciana was sad since Kat was to be killed off in that episode, meaning she lost her long-running job on Battlestar Galactica.

They continued talking about this episode and described a scene which would have better explained why Enzo was on Galactica and what he wanted from Kat, a scene which didn’t make it into the final cut.

Luciana Carro During the food shortage, Enzo blackmailed Kat to steal food for him. Kat, fearing revelations about her criminal past, stole several different pieces of food.

In the scene they described, Kat presented Enzo her pickings, and Patrick, completely in character, chose a bit of turkey. While, of all the things offered to him, the turkey was best suited to stave off hunger, it also caused bad breath. Since shooting that scene took place right before shooting the scene which saw Kat and Enzo sleeping together, the kissing was not so pleasant for Luciana.

That original making-out scene didn’t end there, however. In fact, Luciana started undressing Patrick and the scene was supposed to end once she had unbuttoned his shirt. The director didn’t say "cut", though, so they had no choice but to continue playing that scene, and she took off his shirt. Then she tried to open his belt, which got Patrick a bit concerned. Feeling that Enzo wasn’t the kind of guy who wore underwear, he decided to be as true to the character as possible and didn’t have any pants on. Luckily for him, this was when the director finally decided to end the scene, narrowly sparing him from a huge embarrassment.

Luciana Carro Next, the question arose what they would think of a return of their respective characters. Patrick loved his role and would have liked to return, spying on the people on Galactica and blackmailing them with the information he gathered. He compared Enzo to a rat, a shady character that would have been interesting to further explore. Luciana, on the other hand, would have liked to return as an imaginary version of Kat in Starbuck’s mind.

The two were also asked a question which has become obligatory at Wolf Events conventions: How would the guests to sum up the experience they had at the convention with only five words? "Exciting", "surprising", "sweaty", "drunk", "exhausting" and "hot" were the words Patrick chose, (pointing to Luciana when mentioning "hot"), while Luciana described the event with the words "crazy", "party", "sweaty", "live" and "fantastic".

After that, they were asked to describe how they experienced working on Battlestar Galactica. For Luciana, it was a blessing to be able to work alongside the great actors and writers of the show. Patrick said he was proud to have Battlestar Galactica on his resume.

Luciana Carro Among the more unusual questions was who the most intimidating person was they had worked with. In response, Luciana told how she first met Al Pacino. It was while shooting the movie Two for the Money, where she played a hooker and had a scene with both Al Pacino and Rene Russo.

Luciana was a big fan of Al Pacino and very nervous when she met him on the set. So she ignored him at the beginning and greeted Rene Russo first, yet Al Pacino looked at her and hugged her. After that, he told her, while staring at her, that she was perfectly casted for the role. Luciana then lost her shyness, telling him: "Mr. Pacino, my eyes are over here!"

Patrick Currie told the audience about working with an actress whom he was warned not to cast a shadow on, or else she would kill him with his eyes. Unfortunately, he refused to share the name of the actress with the audience; he only stated that she was famous back in the seventies.

Luciana Carro Next up was a funny story about Patrick’s most embarrassing audition. He had to dress like a woman for it, and when he drove to the audition, all the traffic lights seemed to turn red when he approached, so lots of people could enjoy his unusual dress.

Luciana’s most embarrassing audition was for The Chris Isaak Show. For this, she had to strip to a song she chose, but the striptease had to be clumsy rather than sexy. She chose Destiny's Child's "Bootylicious" and stripped down to her underwear, but she didn’t feel comfortable doing something like this. Luciana expressed her hopes that they really did burn the casting tapes like they were supposed to. Luckily it was worth it and she got a recurring role on the show.

Then, while they were at it, they talked about casting directors. Both of them agreed that they absolutely don’t like casting directors who think they can act when they say lines of dialogue during the auditions.

Luciana Carro The discussion moved slightly from embarrassing auditions to auditions for roles they didn’t end up getting. They were asked which of the parts they didn’t get, they would have liked most.

It turned out Luciana was actually quite close to getting the lead role in the hit series Ugly Betty. It was down to her and America Ferrera, who later won a Golden Globe Award for hat role. Luciana assumed Ferrera was chosen because producer Salma Hayek wanted to cast a genuine Latina for that role. Patrick would have liked to get a part in X-Men, but wasn't successful.

With the Q&A panel drawing to a close, there was only time for one more question: Which were their favorite TV shows? Luciana stated she rarely watches TV because she doesn’t have that much time, but she buys series on DVD. The shows she named as her favorites were Six Feed Under, Deadwood, Carnivàle, Pushing Daisies, C.S.I., Prison Break and, of course, Battlestar Galactica. Patrick’s favorites were Ugly Betty, Brothers and Sisters and Heroes.

This concluded a very interesting and entertaining question and answer session.
